I was brought up in a broken home. Sometimes I tell people now we put the 'fun' in dis-functional. My parents divorced when I was young and I lived with my mother until second grade and then moved to live with my Dad in Lilburn, GA. I was raised in a drunkards home with all the mess that goes along with it. My parents loved us but they were simply raising us to live a sinful life and we all needed Christ. I do not remember attending church except maybe on an Easter Sunday or two. A church bus came by our house from Peachtree Road Baptist Church (formerly Old Field Baptist Church) in Suwanee, GA and we began to ride. In 1982 my brother was saved on Easter Sunday. That summer on July 18th, my dad and step mother got saved. On a Sunday night service shortly thereafter my pastor, Preston Moore, asked a question during his preaching that convicted my heart; "If you died today, do know you would go to heaven?" I did not know that. I hoped I would or thought I might, but I didn't know for sure. He preached the plan of salvation. I always knew I was a sinner and that one day I would have to die but I did not know until that night that sin and death went together. He read Romans 5:12 and 6:23 and I learned because I was a sinner I had to die physically and go to hell eternally to pay for my sins. I began to think of every good thing that I had done (and that wasn't much!) trying to justify myself, but he read Ephesians 2:8-9 and I realized salvation could not be earned by any good work or deed I could do. He began to preach about how God loved us sinners and was willing to send His Son to die in our place and how Jesus was willing to die because He loved us. I felt like I could see my sins nailing Jesus to the cross through the powerful preaching of the gospel. He read John 3:16. Romans 5:7-8, and other verses. I was scared to death! I didn't want to go to hell! I had heard Jesus died for the sins of the world but I never realized until that night that He had personally died for me, Terrell Hopkins. The preacher explained Romans 10:9 and said I had to "confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus;" and this meant I needed to tell God I believed Jesus was the Son of God, that He died for me and rose from the dead. But it was more than knowing the facts about Jesus because plenty of lost people know and believe true facts about Jesus. He read Romans 10:10 and explained I needed to place my faith and trust in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I needed more than head knowledge, I needed heart knowledge. He finally read Romans 10:13 and I came to the alter and placed my faith in Jesus Christ and Him alone to be my Savior. I remember crying and saying, "Oh God, I don't want to go to hell, I don't want to go to hell, I don't want to go to hell...Please save me now!" I was saved that night as a 15 year old teenager and God changed me forever! The Lord called me to preach less than a year later and I have been serving my Lord ever since. I am certainly not the best Christian God has, but I have the best Savior, the one and only God, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ! As Evangelist Maze Jackson used to say, "I am heaven bound with the hammer down!" AMEN! |
